Paula Moldenhauer
Fiction Friday – Baroness by Susan May Warren

I love history, but the voracious hunger for westward expansion stories has boggled my mind. I still read them, but have wished for a wider offering in the inspirational market. Susan May Warren’s Baroness fills that need.  Set in the roaring twenties, it is a coming of age story of two cousins, Lilly and Rosie. The story begins in Paris and continues in New York City as well as several locations throughout the United States as one of the characters travels with a flying show.

As usual, Susan delivers at a good clip, moving the story along with rich characterization and well-researched historical detail. I had a little trouble getting into the dual story-lines at first as they jumped back and forth between Lilly and Rosie, but once I pushed through that entry point, I enjoyed the story. By the end found myself hiding behind a closed door with the light on so as not to wake my family while I read into the night. When it ended, I couldn’t wait for book two in the Daughters of Fortune series.

I’m always glad when asked to review a book by Susan May Warren because I know I can count on a good read.

Here are a couple of reviews from people more influential than yours truly:

“In-depth characterization and fascinating historical detail… an honest reflection of sin and the need for God’s redemption.” –TitleTrakk

“Strong entertaining, character-driven historical that will remind readers all that glitters on Wall St. is not gold… Riveting read of high society drama…highly recommended.” –Midwest Book Review
